Birmingham Publicity Association has welcomed a new President to its helm. Selena Higgins-McCarron of Global Radio was appointed at the organisation’s 71st annual general meeting this week.
Held at Global Radio’s Brindleyplace offices, the AGM also saw Natalie Pejovic, senior account manager at Superdream, appointed as vice-chair.
Selena initially joined the BPA in 2002 and previously served as chair from 2009 to 2011.
She said: “I stepped down from council when I had my little boy, but I have always loved being involved with the BPA as I always felt it was important to give something back -whether that is time, experience or money to deserving causes so I’m really pleased to have been invited back to serve as President for the next two years.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Caroline and the council to bring creative and media companies of all sizes across the greater West Midlands together to network, learn, have fun and - most importantly - raise money for our current charity LoveBrum."
Caroline Chell, Chair of the BPA said: “We’re delighted to have Selena back on board – she has always been a big supporter of the BPA and is the perfect person to help steer the organisation forward.
“I’m also thrilled that Natalie has agreed to be vice chair – while she’s only served on the BPA Council for two years, she has had a huge impact, and shows real commitment. She’s played a big part in making some of our recent events a success.
“Her commitment has been noted by the Council as a whole – she is also the recipient of the Longley Merit Cup, which sees council members nominate the person they feel has gone above and beyond in their duties to support the BPA. The accolade is very well deserved,” she added.
Caroline also presented outgoing President Steve Price with the Chairman’s Tankard, saying: “Steve has unquestionably made one of the biggest contributions to the BPA, having served on council for more than a decade and taking on positions as both Chair and President. All of this is done on a voluntary basis and Steve’s support has made a real difference to the council’s work.”
Dedicated to bringing the creative industries in the Midlands closer together, the BPA selects key charities that its members wish to support each year.
Last year the business divided its fund raising efforts between Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, raising £10,000. The BPA is now working closely with LoveBrum supporting its endeavours to boost local causes.
The Birmingham Publicity Association has announced its partnership with LoveBrum, pledging to help raise funds for its community initiatives.
Whilst uniting those working within the creative industries within the Midlands area, the BPA has raised £20,000 for its nominated charities over the past two years and hopes to further the work of LoveBrum in raising the profile and providing cash injections for a wide range of regional causes.
The BPA was established more than 70 years ago, and in that time, has supported countless local causes. Chair Caroline Chell said that the LoveBRUM partnership was a different concept:
“We’re very proud of the way our organisation ticks so many boxes. We’re primarily here to bring those working in the creative industries together, but we also have a proven track record for providing as many educational and skill-honing opportunities; such as radio script-writing workshops; we also host fun, networking opportunities such as quiz nights and our legendary Christmas lunch.
“But underlying all of those events has been a charitable quest to raise as much money as possible. In 2015/16 we donated £10,000 between Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity.
“2017/18 will see us work alongside LoveBrum, engaging with local businesses and residents – predominantly those within our own membership and extended circle – to highlight lesser-known charities and projects within the region and support them, with the ultimate aim of making Birmingham even better and more brilliant than before. We’re extremely excited to be working with such a focused and dynamic team, and we’re hoping to achieve great things,” she added.
PJ Ellis, co-Founder and trustee of LoveBRUM commented: “We are very fortunate to have the support of the BPA and are very excited to work with them over the next few years.
“LoveBRUM is not just about supporting local projects that are delivering real change to our already amazing city, but also about bringing people together in order to showcase the other hidden gems of Birmingham; we do this in the hope of enabling longstanding connections and to restore some real civic pride.
“The BPA is one of these gems and we very much look forward to introducing our members from the creative industries to such an established, vibrant and fantastic organisation. Oh, and of course the legendary Christmas lunch!!"
The BPA supports the media and creative industries in the region, while raising money for key charities that its members wish to support. Its members include global organisations to sole traders, graduate trainees right up to CEOs and MDs, media owners and agencies, advertising and marketing agencies, digital agencies, PR agencies and freelancers.
Events in 2016 included a speaker event putting Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Paul Faulkner in the spotlight to discuss the impact of Brexit, a radio script-writing workshop and the launch of the Midlands Media Mingle networking event.
The first event of 2017 will take place on March 3rd at Henry’s Cantonese Restaurant in St Paul’s Square.
